HEARTWOOD- extended bio

HEARTWOOD

“The audience greeted each song with anticipation, and rewarded the young duo with a standing ovation.” Doug Picard, Ground Zero Acoustic Lounge

Heartwood is the brand new and perfect pairing of award-winning singer-songwriters Jack Connolly and Genevieve Charbonneau from Vancouver Island’s Cowichan Valley. Jack and Genevieve are outstanding performers in their own right, but when their songwriting talents, charisma and musical chops are combined, the result is roots and folk magic. Soulful harmonies and the interplay of skillful guitar enrich original songs that are clever, intimate and highly accessible. Heartwood, which made its concert debut in November 2018 to rave reviews, casts a spell on live audiences that lasts long after the music is over.

Jack Connolly has been pushing for musical perfection ever since he released his first album in 2001 at the tender age of 15. Three years later, he was named songwriter of the year at the 2004 Vancouver Island Music Awards. His ever-growing reputation as a gifted songwriter and dynamic performer has won him invitations to play venues across Canada with the likes of Tom Cochrane, Colin James, Spirit of the West, 54-40, Wide Mouth Mason, and Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. When not performing, Jack teaches music at Shawnigan Lake School, where he is recording his forthcoming album “Move Me,” co-produced by Genevieve and due out late Spring 2019.

“Jack’s music already shows more depth than a simple comparison would allow for. He is a step above the current crop of “new country” songwriters and a better guitar player than most songwriters”  (Vancouver Island Music fest)

Genevieve Charbonneau is making up for lost time. A trained actress and dancer and long-time member of the award-winning Balkan Babes musical ensemble, Genevieve only started crafting her songs of love, loss and political mayhem in 2012, in between raising her three sons at her Cowichan Valley homestead. Since then, she has released two CDs of original material, including one with her all-female quintet Genevieve and the Wild Sundays. Her song “Down Down Down” won the 2017 BC Musicians Songwriters Contest and that same year Genevieve was named a finalist for the International Acoustic Music Awards. Her third studio album “Heart is a Tower” is being co-produced by Jack and will be released in March 2019.

“Genevieve is a talented artist who brings a genuine freshness to the roots and folk and bluegrass music she creates. She writes great songs, engages audiences with ease, and is the kind of community-minded artist and human being that we could frankly, use a lot more of.” (Kelly Nakasuka, AD IFF)
